The Best Ways To Paint Your Exterior

If you want to paint the outside of your home, there are a few different ways to go about it. You can buy basic paint brushes and rollers, along with some other equipment and do it by hand. Alternatively, you can rent a pneumatic spraygun and apply the paint that way. This article explains the main drawbacks and advantages of each method. It should help you determine which choice is better for your particular property.

Painting with Rollers

When you do the painting by hand, mainly with rollers, you don't have to do as much preparation work. Since you don't have to worry about overspray, you won't create too big of a mess. You will still need to cover your floors, roofline, windows and doors to protect from drips and spills, but it won't be as extensive as the masking that is necessary if you use a spraygun. So, it is usually more convenient to use rollers if you have walls that are close to your neighbors or other things that you don't want to get paint on like landscaping, flowerbeds, perimeter fences and so on.

Using a Spraygun

When you paint with a spraygun, you have to do much more preparation work, but the actual paint application goes by very quickly. Of course, you will probably have to rent a spraygun and compressor system in order to complete the job. Luckily, these are affordable and surprisingly easy to operate. Since the overspray from the gun can travel very far, especially on a windy day, you need to mask off a large perimeter around the walls you are painting.

But, if you are working on new construction, when there is no landscaping or pathways around the walls your paining, overspray is less consequential. This is why most new homes are sprayed rather then rolled. Sprain is also more practical if you have a smaller workforce. If you only have two or three people working on the job, having just one done won't be a problem. However, if you have five or more people who are able to work at one time, it might be faster to use rollers because each person can help out.

In the end, it really comes down to the design and situation of your property. Either way, don't skimp on the preparation work because it is very important if you want to clean, successful paint job.
