How to Get Straight Lines

Getting clean, straight lines is perhaps the most vital part of making your paint job look professional. If your lines look sloppy, your entire paint job looks sloppy, even if it is nicely filled in. First of all, you should follow the natural lines in your walls instead of trying to create perfectly straight ones. For instance, the lines in the corner of your walls might not be perfectly straight. If you make a straight line with a yard stick or ruler, it might not match the lines of the room. Also, when taping off along wooden molding, you should leave a slight space between the molding and the paint. That is, you want to leave room for the caulk line. If your molding is already caulked, just follow the top edge of the caulk line.

How to Get Cleaner Lines

Many people make the mistake of applying the tape and then just sloppily painting right over it. They expect that the tape will create a perfect line, but this usually isn't the case. Especially on surfaces with a slight texture, the paint can bleed underneath the tape. When you peel the tape away, you're left with a splotchy line. A good way to fix this problem is to get a little bit of lightweight spackling paste. Basically, you just spread the paste right over the tape line. You want to rub it on very thinly.

This tiny amount of spackling paste will fill in the gaps underneath the tape and stop the paint from seeping underneath. If your lines are clean and straight, you paint job looks great.
