How To Paint Over Board And Batten

Board and batten have become a staple in a number of households, thanks in part to some interior designers that you see all the time on television and in magazines and of course on social media. Board and batten have been around for a long time, but it's had a huge comeback and is seen everywhere. This design can add beauty to any home, and it can be easily painted over so you don't have to worry about removing it when you get tired of how it looks. If you have this look in your home and need it painted, read on for some tips on how to get this done.

Clean The Wood

You should spend a little bit of time cleaning the wood, especially if it's been a while since it's been painted or cleaned. Greasy and oily hands have probably touched that wall over and over again, and it's best to clean it all off to prevent issues with the paint bubbling, staining, or not adhering properly. Clean the board and batten using a mild dish soap and some water. Then rinse it all off thoroughly. Be sure to get into the grooves of the board and batten, in between each and every piece to ensure it is cleaned thoroughly.

Use A Paintbrush

You may think that using a thick napped roller will get in between the grooves on the board and batten, but it won't, and chances are you are just going to smear paint everywhere or create a big mess for yourself. Use a paintbrush to cut into the board and batten and to get in between the grooves. Use enough paint to get into the grooves, but not so much paint that it runs.

Roll On The Paint

After you've cut in the paint with a brush, use the roller to roll on the flat surfaces of the wall and then blend in the brush marks as best as you can. You may need a few coats of paint to get this job complete, but the end result will be worth it. You should use a nap roller option that isn't too thick so that the paint goes on smooth without roller marks.

If you have board and batten in your home, painting over it just like you would any wall can give it new life. For more information on interior house painting techniques, contact a professional painter.
